A Case History on Waterproofing
Last year Roland Newman of Newman Conservation, Builders, contacted TDT Preservation and asked us to advise on a system of waterproofing some vaults which run beneath the road in Marlborough Street, Bath.
The vaults, which are stone built, comprise two parallel arches, one of which linked to a Jack arch which supports the pedestrian bridge to the ground floor front door of the house to which the vaults belong.
The area was being used for storage and the intention was to upgrade the areas for domestic uses.
TDT Preservation assessed the situation and discussed the Client’s requirements with Roland and, as a result, recommended the introduction of a polyethylene lining system which has a webbing affixed to its surface to allow the application of a direct rendering coat, the material used was Oldroyd P.
Roland dealt with the relevant approvals and early in 2007 commenced work to prepare the areas to TDT’s specification and requirements.
Once the preparatory work had been undertaken TDT’s operatives attended and introduced the lining system (see photographs).
The material is applied to all the wall, vaulted and floor surfaces. It allows the entry of water behind the system. The collected water is discharged into floor drains beneath the membrane.
Any minor subsequent structural movement will not have a detrimental effect on the system and, due to the air gap behind the lining, will reduce the effects of air moisture condensing on the surfaces.
If you have underground space you wish to upgrade and utilize for domestic or storage Purposes a TDT Surveyor will be pleased to visit your property and offer advice and quotations.
